Tory Ken Clarke prepared to back Jeremy Corbyn as caretaker PM

Tory grandee Ken Clarke says he would be prepared to back Jeremy Corbyn as caretaker Prime Minister in a bid to stop a no-deal Brexit .

The Conservative MP has himself been mooted as a potential interim leader if MPs are successful in bringing down Boris Johnson ’s government.

The plan would be for a caretaker leader to take control of the Commons for a few weeks in order to call an election, which would dissolve Parliament.

It comes after some MPs who backed the plan to overthrow the Government, including Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson, had questioned whether Corbyn had enough support in the House.

But former Chancellor Ken Clarke said he would back Corbyn as long as he could be kept “under control”.

He told Sky News: “So long as it were absolutely certain we could keep Jeremy under control and he wouldn't have the slightest chance of implementing any bits of his Labour manifesto, I hate to tell you but I probably would."

But he said it was unlikely to to happen, because Corbyn was “the least suitable person you could imagine.”

He said: “I don't think it's going to happen, because I must be one of a tiny number of Tories prepared to contemplate that.

"The unfortunate truth for Jeremy, who I get on quite well with - I don't agree on anything political with him apart from a bit on Europe - is he's a red rag to a bull on all sides.

"So he's about the least suitable person you could imagine."
