Tory James Cleverly accused of 'crashing into car while talking on phone' on M11

Tory chairman James Cleverly has become embroiled in an online row with a motorist over a car accident.

The MP was involved in a “minor accident” on the M11 motorway near his Braintree constituency in Essex on Friday evening.

But a Twitter user claiming to be the other driver - named Asim Khan - accused Cleverly of being “dishonest” and a “liar”.

In a series of tweets, the Twitter user claimed Mr Cleverly had been speeding and using his phone at the time of the crash.

A party source denied both claims.

Posting a video of Mr Cleverly at the side of the road, the user wrote: "This guy James Cleverly... is not to be trusted.

“He hit my car on M11 while speeding and using his phone.

“At the scene he admitted it was his fault. He damaged my new car.

"When I contacted him he said he is not accepting liability. Shame on u.”

A Conservative Party spokesman said: “James was involved in a minor accident with another car on Friday.

“The matter is now being dealt with by his insurance company.”
