Tory education minister in awkward interview as he forgets his own exam grades

A Tory minister was left red faced this morning after he said he had "forgotten" what exam grades he achieved when in school.

Gavin Williamson, Boris Johnson's Education Secretary, was interviewed earlier today about the release of the exam results in England following another year of disruption for pupils.

In the 1 minute 30 seconds exchange between LBC radio presenter Nick Ferrari and Williamson he refused a number of times to say what grades he got in his A-Levels.

It comes as pupils across the UK get their results after a tough year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ahead of the results Ferrari asked Williamson what grades he got when he was at school.

Here is the full exchange between the pair:

Williamson said: "I remember walking up to those college doors and going into my college at six form and getting that envelope, and opening up that envelope seeing the grades on there and just feeling absolute delight."

Ferrari jumps in to say: "Never mind, what were those grades?"

Williamson replies: "As the sudden realisation that all my dreams of the next step of doing social science at Bradford University.

"For a lad growing up in Scarborough Bradford was the most exotic and exciting place in the whole world."

Ferrari says: "And what were your grades again Mr Williamson?"

He replies: "I don't think I mentioned my grades."

"You can't remember your grades?" Ferrari adds.

Williamson says: "It's so long ago, it was 27 years ago."

"Did you get three A stars?" Ferrari interrupts to ask.

The minister replies: "I didn't get three A stars it's fair to say."

Ferrari then asks if it's a state secret, Williamson says it is.

He adds: "I've forgotten it's so long ago, I mean it was 27 years ago. You can't remember what was happening last weekend."

In Scotland, there has been a drop in the pass rate.

Results show the pass rates at grades A-C for Higher was 87.3%, the Advanced Higher pass rate 90.2% and the National 5 pass rate was 85.8%.

In 2020, the Higher pass rate was 89.3%, the Advanced Higher pass rate was 93.1% and the National 5 pass rate was 89.0%.
