Tory climate change failure doesn't just risk our future – it costs jobs too

Britain used to lead the world when it came to developing the jobs and technologies of the future. We invented things here, we built them here and those industries supported decent jobs across the country.

But we’ve fallen behind under the last decade of Tory-led Governments. While other countries have invested in new jobs and industries, our government has failed to deliver. We’ve seen for more talk than action – and that’s cost our country jobs.

Over a million jobs have gone during the Covid-19 crisis, with many more still to come. The number of vacancies has reached record lows this year, yet the Government doesn’t have a plan to get us out of this jobs crisis.

On top of that we also face a climate emergency. Right now, we’re not on track to meet our net zero 2050 target. In fact, the UK is only just over a third of the way there.

Accelerating investment in clean projects such as energy efficiency, flood prevention and offshore wind would help to create secure, stable employment in every corner of the country (PA)

Why? Because this Government hasn’t delivered on clean infrastructure and technology. That’s not just risking our future – it’s costing jobs too.

Labour is ambitious for Britain. We think it’s time to build it in Britain again. Accelerating investment in clean projects such as energy efficiency, flood prevention and offshore wind would help to create secure, stable employment in every corner of the country right now.

And with Britain facing a 1980s-syle jobs crisis, we urgently need that investment in the jobs of the future. That’s why Labour is today saying the Government must urgently get £30 billion of investment out the door to support 400,000 new, clean jobs in manufacturing and other key sectors over the next 18 months.

Future generations will judge us by the choices we make today to tackle both the Covid and the climate crisis – but we’re hearing nothing from Boris Johnson.

We can harness the opportunities for green growth if the Government takes the right decisions now. It can start by matching Labour’s ambition and taking action to support 400,000 jobs of the future today.

Now’s the time to build it in Britain.
