Tory candidate wants people to live in tents and pick potatoes 12 hours a day

A Tory candidate has said he wants "nuisance" council house tenants to live in tents and pick food for 12 hours a day.

Lee Anderson, standing as the Conservative candidate for Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, posted a video on Facebook claiming "nuisance tenants" make peoples lives a "misery" in the area.

He then went on to explain how he thinks they should be plucked from their homes and made to live in a field in tents - working from 6am-6pm every day.

In the bizarre clip, Anderson, says: "I stood on this spot a few months ago banging on about nuisance tenants throughout this lovely estate and the fact they were making peoples lives a complete misery.

"People say, 'they have got to live somewhere' - that's right, so my plan would be, and again this is just my own personal opinion, is that these people who have to live somewhere, let's have them in a tent, in the middle of a field.

"Six o'clock every morning, let's have them up, let's have them in the field, picking potatoes or any other seasonal vegetables, back in the tent, cold shower, lights out, six o'clock, same again the next day. That would be my solution."

Anderson was previously a Labour supporter, but said he was driven out of the party by Momentum activists.

He claims to have worked at homeless charities before moving into politics.

In the caption accompanying the footage, Anderson said his solution would; "Reduce anti social behaviour. Free up much needed housing for decent people. Solve the labour shortage on our farms."

Many Facebook users reacted angrily to the video, with Billy Craig saying: "Is that your “final solution?” Good luck trying to be the new Katie Hopkins, heard she’s on the verge of living in a tent."

Alan Ray said: "I live on a Council estate and have crap neighbours but all live in private housing nothing to do with council so don't assume all have council houses have trouble makers."

In October, figures revealed 726 homeless people died in England and Wales last year - up by a fifth due to a rise in deaths from drug poisoning.

They have more than doubled in the six years the ONS has been recording the data.

The shocking figures emerged as a huge delivery of champagne was delivered to Tory conference as MPs discussed poverty and homelessness.

Lee posted his views in a "Weekly Rant' video on Facebook (Facebook)

Dozens of bottles of Pol Roger bubbly were delivered to the Manchester Central conference centre. The official ONS figures showed the average age at death was 45 years for males and 43 years for females in 2018 compared to 76 for men and 81 for women among the general population.

Housing minister Luke Hall said the figure was “heartbreaking” and funding to help rough sleepers was increasing.

Lib Dem Spokesperson Layla Moran said: "Everyone in this country deserves a decent standard of living. Conservative candidate Lee Anderson’s comment exposes a concerning disregard for this basic human right, and a lack of empathy towards those whom he aspires to represent.

"As a Conservative parliamentary candidate in a marginal seat, Anderson should not be stoking and entrenching division, or targeting vulnerable people.

"Unfortunately, this sort of comment is all too common from Conservative Party candidates, who are out of touch with the constituencies and the people they are attempting to represent."

Lee Anderson has been approached for a comment.
