Tory candidate for Wells sends out leaflet boasting about spending in Wales

Voters in Wells were very confused when a Tory election leaflet dropped on their doormat boasting about government spending...100 miles away in a different country.

It was sent by Tory candidate James Heappey, who has been MP for Wells since 2015 - and is a close aide of Boris Johnson .

The mock newspaper-style leaflet featured a series of articles about local schools and hospitals.

But upon closer inspection, voters learned the stories weren’t about public services in Wells, they were all about Wales.

The front page was titled: "The Wells Constituency Future" and declared Brexit is "ready to go".

But inside, headings declared there was "More money for our Welsh NHS

Another 'article' entitled "Investing In Our Future", boasted of government spending boosting opportunities across Wales - including the creation of a new Parkway station near Swansea.

Swansea is almost 100 miles from Wells.

Mr Heappey admitted it was “embarrassing” and said it had happened in other places as well.

Writing on Facebook , he told a supporter: "It's one of ours. Produced by party centrally - clearly wrong content on centre pages.

"Same thing happened in other constituencies too."

He added: "Don't know whether fault was with party HQ or printer but embarrassing either way."

When Parliament broke up for the election, Mr Heappey was Boris Johnson's Parliamentary Private Secretary.
