Tory candidate apologises after calling for 'Bristol to be bombed' in wake of riots

A Conservative candidate has caused outrage after calling for Bristol to be bombed in the wake of the riots.

Stephen Halbhuber, who hopes to represent the St Anthony’s ward in Eastbourne, made the comments after 21 police officers were injured during a night of violence in our city.

The NHS worker has now issued an unreserved apology, and says in the 'cold light of day he completely regrets' his tweet.

Seven arrests have already been made after 12 officers were injured - two seriously - following the night of disorder on Sunday.

The country watched in horror as pictures emerged of the chaos which spilled out on to the city's streets, after a peaceful protest at College Green.

Police chiefs have now blamed “violent extremists and criminals” for hijacking the event.

After witnessing events in Bristol, Mr Halbhuber tweeted: "Just bomb Bristol."

But the next day he wrote: "I want to apologise unreservedly for my comments last night, and for any offence caused. Needless to say, it is not something that I believe, or would advocate for. In the cold light of day, I completely regret them.

"I have a responsibility to residents to act with propriety and tolerance. Yesterday, I fell beneath that standard, and can only apologise and promise to learn from my mistake."

Hundreds of people responded to his tweet.

One wrote: "No recovering from this."

Someone else said: "Is that nuclear or conventional bombs? Asking for the city of Bristol."

Another wrote: "You showed your true colours for a moment. If you didn’t believe it, you wouldn’t have said it."
