Tory bosses expel activist after woman claims she was 'attacked' at Midland Hotel

Tory bosses have expelled a man from the party's conference after a woman alleged she was assaulted at the Midland Hotel.

Clementine Cowton, director of external affairs at Octopus Energy Group, reportedly told a fringe event at the Conservative Party conference that she had been 'violently assaulted' during an incident at the bar of the hotel.

GMP confirmed officers were called to the incident, in the early hours of this morning, and said no arrests have made.

A spokesman for the Conservative Party said an individual has had their accreditation for the conference revoked.

Ms Cowton said she was in the bar of the hotel when a 'very intoxicated' man sat next to her and 'invaded' her space.

She said she politely asked him to leave, but he refused.

To try and get away from him, Ms Cowton said she took his phone and dropped it on the floor.

"He went to retrieve it and then he came back and attacked me," she told The Times.

She said the man tried to punch her, but others got involved and restrained him.

"He only managed to get as far as smashing a glass out of my hand," she said.

A Conservative Party spokesman said: "This behaviour is completely unacceptable and the party has revoked the pass of the individual concerned and is working with the police."

GMP confirmed it responded to the incident.

A spokesman said a man has been identified but no arrests have been made.

In a statement, the force said: "Police responded to an incident at the Midland hotel at around 12:30am this morning (Monday 4 October) to reports of an assault on a 33-year-old woman.

"Officers arrived quickly, there were no reports of any injures, and no arrests were made, however a man has been identified, had his accreditation removed for the remainder of the Conservative Party Conference.

"Our investigation into what happened is ongoing.

"GMP is here to protect. Women's safety is a top priority, and something we continue to take incredibly seriously.

"If you see or hear anything that doesn't seem quite right, don't hesitate to get in touch with police, which you can do via LiveChat on our website www.gmp.police.uk, or call 101, or 999 in an emergency."
