'Tortured' Scot facing death sentence in India after being held for years without trial

A Scot is facing the death sentence in India after being held for three years without trial and “tortured”.

Jagtar Singh Johal was arrested on November 4, 2017 after travelling to Punjab for his wedding, with local media linking his detention to the killing of Hindu leaders in the area.

Human rights group Reprieve has appealed to Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to secure the release of the Scottish Sikh. Jagtar, 33, from Dumbarton, said via his lawyer: “They made me sign blank pieces of paper and asked me to say certain lines in front of a camera under fear of extreme torture.”

Reprieve deputy director Dan Dolan said: “Action from the British Government could save Jagtar’s life and bring him home to his family. Why won’t they call for his release?”

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “Our staff continue to support Jagtar Singh Johal and are in regular contact with his family and prison officials about his health and wellbeing.”
