Tortoise rescued as 'huge flames' destroy part of family home

A tortoise was rescued by firefighters after a family home went up in flames in Norris Green.

Emergency services were called to Sedgemoore Road at about 8.05pm on Sunday evening after reports that the kitchen of a home was completely ablaze.

A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said the kitchen of the semi-detached property was "100% damaged".

Fortunately there were no injuries, the spokesman added, but firefighters did rescue a tortoise from the burning building.

Reports on social media said neighbours could see "huge flames" coming from the home and "the house was totally  blackened".

It's understood a woman and two children live in the home.

One neighbour wrote on a Facebook group: "She has probably lost everything just before Christmas."

The fire brigade were at the scene until 10.45pm, the spokesman said, after controlling the fire at 8.30pm.

He said the scene of the fire was being investigated on Monday morning.

The ECHO have approached Merseyside Police for further information.

The tragic fire comes just weeks after a heavy police presence was spotted on Sedgemoore Road.

Dramatic pictures showed a large police swoop on the road at about 12am on November 2.

A police 'Matrix' van could be seen parked outside of a home, while at least two other imposing vans could be seen patrolling the area.
