Tchaikovsky’s sixth symphony covers a spectrum of emotions including hope, tenderness, exhilaration and despair. Traditionally known as his Pathéthique symphony (better translated as passionate symphony), he described the work as “the best thing I ever composed or shall compose”.
French conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier, who won first prize for violin at the Paris Conservatoire at 14 in 1962, will conduct the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in the moving piece.
Additionally Australian-Ukranian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk will join the orchestra for Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto no 1. Like Tchaikovsky’s Pathéthique, the concerto is a strong and emotional piece, written when the Russian composer was not yet 20 years old.
Finally Anatoly Liadov’s The Enchanted Lake will bring the calm to the passionate evening, in a piece that evokes stars reflected in cold, dark water.
