Bengals sign CB Torry McTyer from Chiefs practice squad

The Cincinnati Bengals added cornerback Torry McTyer from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad this week.

It was an unexpected move, but a knee injury to Darius Phillips despite his recent breakout forced the Bengals to put him on injured reserve.

With a new player on the roster, it’s time to look at details about McTyer.

Background: McTyer is a 5-foot-11, 188-pound corner who is 24 years old and spent his college days at UNLV before going undrafted in 2017.

NFL background: McTyer landed with the Miami Dolphins in May 2017 and appeared in 22 games, especially contributing on special teams. He lasted until this August, then latched on with the Chiefs practice squad.

Extra: Torry is the son of former NFL player Tim McTyer, who played three seasons in the league with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns.

Stats: McTyer started four games in Miami, tallying 31 tackles and three passes defensed.

Extra: In 2018 under head coach Adam Gase, McTyer was in contention for a starting spot opposite Xavien Howard.

Advanced: In 2018, McTyer graded at 52.0 at Pro Football Focus, allowing 22 receptions on 27 targets. Overall, he’s allowed a 74.3 completion percentage on 11.8 yards a target and two touchdowns over 411 snaps.

Highlight: He’s a wicked tackler in space, which isn’t common for the position. These clips aren’t hard to find.
