Torrential rain to lash parts of UK but five-day 27C scorcher is on the way

The washout sodden summer is set to continue on Tuesday with more torrential rain but a five-day scorcher will send temperatures soaring later this week.

Forecasters are predicting more heavy downpours today after weeks of rainy weather for Brits.

The worst hit regions are predicted to be in the north west by the day time with some sunny spells seen in the south and south west this morning.

By tonight the heavy rain will have spread further south, where it is also expected to remain cloudy throughout.

The relatively low temperatures of recent days will also continue with highs forecast barely approaching 20C in many areas of the UK.

But there is hope that a mini-heatwave is on its way amid predictions of a five-day hot streak that will see temperatures reach highs of 27C in some parts.

From Thursday the nation will start to see warmer temperatures reaching near mid-20s, with Londoners forecast to expect highs of up to 25C.

And the rising heat will continue all the way to the weekend when forecasters predict the mercury to climb to highs of 27C in some regions.

The warmer spell of weather is expected to last until at least Monday.

According to the Met Office's long range forecasts while the rain will still fall with showers in some areas the weekend is expected to be warmer with drier conditions and sunshine.

A Met Office forecaster said: "The bigger picture shows this intense heatwave across southern parts of Europe.

"Record breaking temperatures are possible this weekend across Spain and Portugal. Meanwhile across the UK it is a lot more changeable and cooler.

"This run of north westerly winds continuing this week and some wet weather fronts bring showers or rain at times but settled conditions possible later in the week."

UK Weather Forecast

Today:

Low cloud across many parts with some light rain and drizzle, especially over northwestern coasts and hills. Cloud breaking to allow some sunny spells to lee of hills in northeast, where locally warm, and far south and southwest. Breezy again.

Tonight:

Patchy light rain, drizzle and low cloud for most places, this locally heavy across far north, with emphasis shifting more to the south and west later. Clearer across northeast Britain.

Wednesday:

Generally rather cloudy, though brighter with some sunny spells developing to the lee of high ground. Patchy light rain or drizzle in places, especially over coasts and hills in west.
