Torrential rain leaves Newport roads flooded with several closed to traffic

Roads have been closed in Newport due to "significant levels of flooding".

Newport City Council said several major roads were affected by the flooding on Wednesday, as torrential rain fell throughout south Wales.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for rain is currently in place and is due to be lifted at 2am on Christmas Eve.

The warning covers most of south Wales and warns that heavy rainfall may lead to flooding in places and disruption to travel with a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded.

"Newport City Council are currently dealing with significant levels of flooding and some roads are currently closed with others severely affected by flooding," a council spokesperson said on Wednesday.

"Drivers are asked to take extra care in these conditions and avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary."

The roads affected include:

  • Kingsway between Heidenheim Drive and the bus station closed in both directions
  • Pillmawr Lane - closed
  • Parc y Brain Lane - closed
  • Southern Distributor Road opposite Tesco eastbound - one lane closed

According to the Met Office forecast: "Spells of heavy rain are expected across southern England and parts of Wales during Wednesday into early Thursday.

"The heaviest rain is likely to develop during Wednesday evening and continue overnight before clearing away to the southeast by Thursday morning.

"Much of the area is likely to see 20-40 mm through this period. There is still some uncertainty in exactly where the heaviest rain will fall but there is the potential for some places to see as much as 50-70 mm of rain."
