Torrential rain in South Korea leaves 17 dead and 11 missing

  • Heavy rainfall over five consecutive days in South Korea has resulted in at least 17 fatalities and 11 people still missing.
  • The resort town of Gapyeong saw two deaths and several missing due to a landslide and flooding, while the southern town of Sancheong reported eight deaths and six missing from flash floods and landslides.
  • President Lee Jae Myung declared the worst-affected regions, primarily in the south, as special disaster zones to facilitate government support for recovery and relief efforts.
  • Interior Minister Yoon Ho Jung urged local authorities to deploy all available resources for swift emergency restoration work and announced a prompt damage assessment for affected facilities and homes.
  • The torrential downpours, which forced the evacuation of over 3,840 people and broke July rainfall records, subsided on Sunday, with heavy rain alerts subsequently lifted across most of the country.
