Torquay United boss confirms discussions to sign exciting Bristol City striker Saikou Janneh

Former Robins boss Gary Johnson has confirmed he is in talks to re-sign talented young Bristol City striker Saikou Janneh on loan as his current club Torquay United.

Bristol Live exclusively revealed yesterday the striker is on track to recover sooner than expected from a knee injury which required surgery and has kept him out of action so far this season and scuppered a loan move in the summer.

With the transfer window closed, Janneh can only move to a non-league side to play first-team football, and The Gulls fit the bill perfectly.

Torquay United are mid-table in the National League and Janneh's arrival there - where he scored 18 goals in 34 games last season - may boost the fortunes of the Gulls, who already have Bristol City defender Robbie Cundy , and midfielders Opi Edwards and Connor Lemonheigh-Evans on loan from City, with former City midfielder Jake Andrews involved too.

When fully fit Janneh is expected to head to Plainmoor until January to get first team minutes before a league loan can be looked for, though whether Doncaster Rovers, who were close to landing the teenager in the summer, will return for Janneh or another League One side can be found remains to be seen.

Discussing the potential loan move, Torquay United manager Gary Johnson told Devon Live: "Saikou won't be fit to play for anybody for another two or three weeks, but our club and Bristol City have been talking."

Janneh is understood to be back in light training with the Robins.

United boss Gary Johnson will have the perfect opportunity to talk Bristol City about the loan move in more detail when the Robins visit Plainmoor on Tuesday, October 15 (7pm) in the second of a planned series of 'reserve' friendlies over the course of the season.
