For the third time in four years, the Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC will meet in MLS Cup to decide who is the top club in the league. Unlike their previous two meetings in which the teams split, this will be the first time Seattle has hosted the league’s championship decider. Also, unlike the first two, the Sounders will enter as the favorites.

The fact that Toronto FC is at this stage is already quite a feat. Once the class of the entire league, it was a down year for the Reds across the board. Despite entering the playoffs as just the No. 4 seed, they shocked both top-seeded NYCFC in the conference semifinals and No. 2 seed Atlanta United in the conference finals for a 2-1 win. They went on the road both times in difficult conditions and environments and pulled out the win. Making the accomplishment even more impressive is that they did it without their top striker in Jozy Altidore. The U.S. international’s status for the final is very much in doubt with it being said he’ll need “a miracle” to be fit in time. However, TFC has fought against all odds the entire postseason. If the team can do it one more time, it can call itself champions once again.
There’s no doubting Seattle’s place in the final. The team has been extremely good in getting this far, including dominating the best team in the league, LAFC, on the road in the conference final for a 3-1 win. If the same clinical and precise team that beat L.A. shows up in the final, there’s a great chance of the Sounders winning their second MLS Cup. Raul Ruidiaz was the difference in that match. The Peruvian striker kicked it into another gear to carry his team past a star-studded opponent. Alongside Jordan Morris and Nicolas Lodeiro, Seattle has a very talented squad capable of exciting and free flowing soccer.
