'Tornado' swoops through Scottish town as shocked locals share pictures online

Residents in Renfrewshire have been left stunned after witnessing a "twister" swooping through a town.

Locals across Johnstone have been sharing images of what they describe as a "tornado" over the area on Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses told local website Renfrewshire News that they saw "rubbish and branches being lifted into the air", however there is not thought to have been any structural damage to properties in the area.

Posting an image from the town, Twitter user @MillieMeadow asked STV weather presenter Sean Batty if he could give more information on what she was seeing.

She wrote: "What's this coming out of the cloud near Johnstone? On bus at time so terrible photos but it was twister like and very dark."

Another user messaged the Met Office, asking: "Is this a mini tornado? Picture taken in Johnstone, Scotland, this afternoon".

A third joked: "The world is about to end in Johnstone "

And another added: "Rather a large tornado over Johnstone, Scotland. I blame Boris Johnson."

The cloud was also seen further west in Lochwinnoch, before heading towards Howwood, Johnstone and Paisley.

In order for the funnel cloud to be officially deemed a tornado, it has to be in contact with both the surface of the Earth and a cumulonimbus cloud.

The news comes amid a period of bad weather across most of the UK.

An entire village in Derbyshire has had to be evacuated after a huge dam wall partially collapsed during heavy rain.

There are danger to life fears for nearby residents with concerns the structure could fail completely.

And in East Ayrshire a number of homes had to be evacuated and roads closed following flash floods.

The A77 has since been shut off for three nights in a row , with images showing cars struggling to pass through the high water levels.
