Tornado rips through Malaga as torrential rain floods streets of tourist town

A spectacular tornado has hit the outskirts of Malaga tonight as scorching weather gave way to freak storms with torrential rain and thunderstorms.

Footage of the phenomena has been posted on social media, with the emergency services receiving hundreds of calls.

The tornado whipped over the area of Campillos, in Malaga, at one stage taking out an electricity pylon and causing a giant flash of fire.

Onlookers said they had seen nothing like it, with one storm chaser describing it as "spectacular" while another said it was "brutal".

Campillos has since been hit by torrential rain, flooding streets and houses.

The local council has warned residents of further bad weather to come and advised them to stay indoors and not use their cars.

The Antequera and Guadalteba regions of Spain are on yellow alert for more rain to come. Some areas have even seen hail.

Campillos was badly hit by flooding last October and the Mayor, Francisco Guerrero said he understood residents were very worried.

"But for now, there are no reasons for concern," he assured.

Damage caused by the tornado is still being assessed but it is known to have brought down trees, as well as the power line.

Other parts of Spain have been hit by bad weather, with the weather agency AEMET warning of electrical storms and flooding.
