Tories sit idle as Scotland drug deaths continue to sore

Scotland’s drug problem needs everyone’s attention.

This is not a party political issue to be used to score points.

So why have the Tories in the UK Government refused to do any homework?

Health professionals, support groups and drug users have all called for a serious look at supervised consumption rooms.

These facilities are credited with turning around deep-rooted problems in communities from Canada to France.

But they are not allowed here.

Why? Because the UK Government won’t give the green light.

Despite their opposition, Tories have paid some lip service to joining a nationwide attempt to improve this health emergency.

So they were asked what research has been done by the Scotland Office into the effectiveness of these specialist rooms. The answer? None.

It is nothing short of a disgrace to learn the UK Government has effectively sat on its hands since the 2017 general election.

The conclusion is surely Tory ministers are acting out of ideological opposition rather than any genuine desire to make a difference.

This revelation is a complete snub to the hard work and effort being put in by the wide range of groups trying to knock heads together and find answers.

Scottish Secretary Alister Jack might not like the suggestions. But to dismiss proposals out of hand without doing any proper homework is an abdication of responsibility.

Going overboard

Navy staff are terrorising locals near Faslane military base.

Pub staff are being abused, regulars are being targeted and, in a shocking incident, a pint was poured into a children’s charity box.

As we reveal today, questions are being asked over the lack of navy police in Helensburgh.

Every town has its share of late-night stupidity but the MoD needs to accept a duty of care.

Sailors are understandably desperate to let of steam after days spent cooped up on a sub.

Most know when to stop. But a hardcore few seem determined to cause chaos.

Police officers are stretched as it is. The Navy needs to step in too. It’s a blowout

High winds and swollen rivers have left destruction in their wake.

And Storm Ciara is far from finished.
