'Tories should take responsibility for stopping free TV licences, not blame BBC'

Broken promises by governing political parties are outrageous breaches of trust and the Conservatives pulling the plug on universal TV licences for all over-75 is a cruel £159 blow for many of our elderly.

The 84-year-old Alzheimer’s sufferer who was threatened with a £1,000 fine unless he pays for what he was assured would be free is proof even Tory voters feel betrayed by the dumping of what was a manifesto pledge.

An estimated 3.7million older folk were cheated when free licences were limited to only the poorest, and while Boris Johnson may be incapable of feeling shame, families of the short-changed are not forgiving the Tories.

Blaming the BBC is wrong and cowardly when the Government forced the broadcaster to take responsibility for callous cuts. People who worked hard all their lives deserve dignity – not contempt – in their later years.

Turn up heat

Labour is drawing a thick red line between itself and the Conservatives today by challenging Tory MPs to support cuts in rising energy bills.

Detailed plans by Keir Starmer’s party would suspend VAT and slash £200 from average bills, reducing heating and lighting charges for the poorest households by as much as £600.

Labour’s proposed windfall tax is entirely justified on soaring profits of North Sea oil and gas producers when money is flooding into corporate coffers.

Whose side a party is on is a fundamental divide in politics and Starmer’s smart to pitch Labour on the side of hard-pressed families.

What a racket

Australia's inept PM Scott Morrison and his Liberal Party Government double-faulted over arrogant and unvaccinated tennis player Novak Djokovic.

Now he is a poster boy for all sorts of Covid cranks, let us never forget foolish Novax could have saved himself a lot of trouble and protected others by being jabbed.
