Tories preparing to blow £500million on extra lambs in a No Deal Brexit

Boris Johnson's government is working on a £500 million plan to support farmers by purchasing slaughtered lambs and other livestock in the event of a no-deal Brexit, according to reports.

If the UK does pursue no deal, the government will buy livestock at prices that prop up demand which will collapse in Europe due to expensive new tariffs, according to The Times.

It comes after a farmers' union in Wales said a No Deal exit cause "civil unrest" in rural areas.

Many British farmers are heavily reliant on trade with the EU and would face very expensive tariffs in a no-deal scenario,up to 42% on sheep and even higher on beef, meaning many could go out of business.

The bid comes as Mr Johnson faces is first big defeat as Prime Ministers with the Lib Dems on track to win a key byelection.

Mr Johnson rushed to Brecon and Radnorshire yesterday in a last minute bid to see off defeat.

But Mr Johnson’s No Deal threats could hand the Leave-voting seat to the Lib Dems, who are now the bookies favourite to win it when voters go to the polls tomorrow.

Defeat would send the Conservative majority to just one seat, just a week after Mr Johnson became PM.

The Tory candidate is disgraced ex-MP Chris Davies, whose conviction for expenses fraud led to the recall petition that triggered the byelection.

Local campaigners believe that Davies was only selected to give the party an excuse should they lose on Friday morning and rivals have accused him of hiding from the voters after it emerged he dodged two local hustings.

In March, Davies, 51, dodged jail and was fined £1,500 and ordered to carry out 50 hours' community service after he admitted giving false information for his Westminster expenses - filing false invoices - to pay for photographs in his office.

Fearing lost votes to the Brexit Party could cost them the seat Mr Johnson said: "The Brexit Party cannot deliver Brexit, only the Conservatives can."

He said the Lib Dems "will do everything they can to stop Brexit" so "if the people of Brecon and Radnorshire want to get Brexit delivered on time, they need to vote for my candidate, Conservative Chris Davies".

Welsh Lib Dem leader Jane Dodds is predicted to with the seat Thursday, winning back a constituency the party lost in its near wipe-our results in 2015.

Her route to victory was made easier after the decision by both Plaid Cymru and the Greens not to stand against their candidates rival Remain party.

The LibDems have ditched the brash “Bollocks to Brexit” slogan from their European election resurgence - but the campaign is still dominated by Europe.

Speaking to the Mirror Ms Dodds said: “Boris Johnson has made a last-minute dash from the ivory tower of Westminster to talk to people here.

“He thinks that is going to work. It isn't

“A No Deal Brexit is playing with people's lives and livelihoods.”
