Tories hold 15 point lead over Labour in latest UK-wide opinion poll

Boris Johnson's Conservative Party holds a 15 percentage-point lead over the Labour Party ahead of a possible General Election aimed at breaking the impasse over Brexit, according to a new poll.

The survey carried out by Opinium and published by The Observer shows the Conservatives on 37 per cent with Labour on just 22 per cent – down three per cent.

The Tories remain well ahead of Labour despite Johnson's controversial decision to prorogue parliament and his determination to take the UK out of the EU by October 31 with or without a deal.

While Johnson has made his hardline position on Brexit clear, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – who is now attending his party conference in Brighton – has refused to state whether he favours Britain leaving the EU or not.

Many within the Labour movement, such as former Prime Minister Tony Blair, have said the party's muddled message on Brexit is damaging it on the doorstep with voters.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats have gone up one per cent since the last Opinium survey on September 4 after new leader Jo Swinson said her party would revoke Article 50 and scrap Brexit altogether without another referendum.

The latest UK-wide survey was conducted online between September 19 and 20 with just over 2000 UK adults aged 18 or over polled.
