Tories face 'annihilation' declares top minister Liz Truss in grim verdict

The Tories face "annihilation" if they do not find the right leader to replace Theresa May , a top minister has warned.

Liz Truss, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, warned the rise of Jeremy Corbyn's Labour and Nigel Farage's Brexit Party could wipe out her party in the polls.

She spoke hours before a new poll suggested the Brexit Party could win more votes in a general election than the Conservative Party.

Ms Truss told the Mail on Sunday: "The Conservative Party needs to wake up.

"Just doing more of what we have been doing for the past nine years is not going to win over modern Britain.

"We need to be bold, otherwise we will be annihilated by the tsunami of Corbyn and Farage."

Ms Truss outlined her own vision for the country, risking the fury of Tory grassroots activists by announcing a million new homes should be built on the Green Belt.

She said: "We need to build a million homes on the London Green Belt near railway stations, and around other growing cities, specifically to allow the under 40s to be able to own their homes.

"We should allow villages to expand by four or five houses a year without having to go through the planning system, so people can afford to live locally."
