Tories axe in-person party conference over social distancing fears

The Conservative Party has cancelled its annual conference.

The gathering, which was due to be held in Birmingham, has been axed in favour of a "virtual event".

The annual event had been due to take place in Birmingham in October but Tory co-chairman Amanda Milling said "most of" the event would now be moved online.

Labour and the Liberal Democrats cancelled their annual gatherings earlier in the pandemic.

In a letter to members she said: "Party conference is a highlight of the political calendar and we know many people will be disappointed if they can't attend conference in person.

"Whilst we hope we will be able to host some aspects in the physical format, we would only do so if allowed by Government guidelines and following the strictest safety guidelines."
