Tories accused of risking kids' lives over axing of 2,000 lollipop men and women

The Tories are accused of risking kids’ lives by letting more than 2,000 lollipop men and women be axed.

In 2009/10 there were 7,128 lollipop staff, in 2017/18 just 5,047 as austerity-hit councils slashed school crossing patrols to save cash.

Last night lollipop heroine Karin Williams, branded the cost-saving “disgusting”. Karin, 57, dived in front on an out-of-control car to take the impact as it hurtled towards a group of children.

The injuries she sustained outside the school in Rhoose, South Wales, cost her her job.

Mum-of-one Karin, who won a Pride of Britain award in 2013 for Outstanding Bravery, blasted the Government for not protecting funding.

She said: “They are putting children at risk for financial reasons. I was never replaced after the accident.”

Labour leadership candidate Lisa Nandy added: “This government is showing a complete disregard for children’s safety.”

But the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government insisted: “Councils, not central government, are responsible for delivering services.”
