Ehime Gov. Tokihiro Nakamura said Monday he is canceling the leg of the Tokyo Olympic torch relay scheduled to take place in Matsuyama on April 21, due to the continuing spread of the novel coronavirus in the city.
Speaking to reporters, Nakamura said he is finalizing the plan with the Tokyo Games organizing committee and other parties. The organizing committee was expected to formalize the cancellation Wednesday.
The ceremony to mark the arrival of the torch in the city will be held without spectators.
Nakamura said he is not planning any alternative measures for runners who were scheduled to participate in the relay.
