The new Toranomon Hills Station in Minato Ward, Tokyo, opened on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line on Saturday.
The stop is expected to be a new business and transportation hub, and will include a bus service to create a quicker connection from the station to the coastal area.
Toranomon Hills Station is located between Kasumigaseki and Kamiyacho stations. It will be the first additional stop along the Hibiya Line since the route opened in full in 1964.
It is also connected to Toranomon Station on the Ginza Line by an underground passage, through which riders can transfer.
The new station will be directly connected to a group of large-scale structures, under construction by entities including Mori Building Co., that are expected to be completed by 2023.
The Bus Rapid Transit that connects the station to the coastal areas is also scheduled to establish airport transport with arrivals and departures. The area around the new station is expected to become a business district that eventually serves about 30,000 people.
An opening ceremony set for Saturday was canceled because of the new coronavirus pandemic. However, a large number of visitors went to the platform on the B1 level to view the new station.
Tokyo Metro and Urban Renaissance Agency started the construction of the new station in 2016.
The total cost of the project is expected to hit 36 billion yen.
