Topshop and Miss Selfridge to close stores in Carmarthen town centre

A major retailer is closing two of its stores in the centre of Carmarthen.

Topshop Topman and Miss Selfridge will both close in March next year after almost a decade of trading.

Topshop Topman, spread over two floors, is located next door to Miss Selfridge in St Catherine’s Walk shopping centre.

They all opened in May 2010 along with a plethora of high-street chain shops and restaurants that were among the first to appear at the multi-million pound shopping development.

Bosses have made staff aware of the decision and say they have tried to offer workers other jobs elsewhere within Arcadia, the group behind the stores.

In a statement confirming the news, a spokeswoman for the group said: "The Topshop Topman and Miss Selfridge stores in Carmarthen will cease trading on March 14, 2020.

"We have endeavoured to offer current staff other employment options within the Arcadia Group.

"Our customers can still visit nearby Topshop Topman and Miss Selfridge stores or shop online at Topshop.com, Topman.com and Missselfridge.com.“

Details of the number of staff affected and when workers were told the news have not been disclosed.

The news will come as a big blow to St Catherine’s Walk, as Topshop Topman and Miss Selfridge are two of the biggest names trading in the centre, along with other national chains such as River Island, Debenhams, H&M, Harvester and Frankie & Benny’s.

Neil James, vice chair of Carmarthen Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said it was a big blow to the town.

“It’s a shame that these stores have decided to close as they were some of the longest serving shops at St Catherine’s Walk.

“All we can hope for now is that the staff can find employment elsewhere and that another shop will move into the unit and that it’s not left empty for long, because it’s in a prime spot in the town and the shopping centre.”

St Catherine’s Walk has declined to comment on the issue.
