Top Trade Officials From China and U.S. to Meet at APEC

What’s new: The top trade officials from China and the U.S. will meet on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial meetings taking place Thursday and Friday in the U.S., the Chinese commerce ministry confirmed.

During the two-day meeting in Detroit, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao will talk to his U.S. counterpart Gina Raimondo and U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, commerce ministry spokesperson Shu Jueting said at a press briefing Thursday.

The two sides will discuss U.S.-China economic and trade relations and other issues, Shu said.

The background: On Sunday, Beijing issued a ban on the products of U.S. chipmaker Micron Technology Inc. after the Chinese internet regulator announced it had found “relatively serious” cybersecurity risks in the company’s products sold in the country.

During a meeting with representatives of U.S. companies and the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai on Monday, Wang said “China will continue to welcome U.S.-invested enterprises to develop in China” and that the commerce ministry is committed to helping create a market-oriented, law-based and internationalized first-class business environment.
