Top tips for a spring day out - even when the British weather lets you down

The weather's getting warmer, days getting longer and the sun's out more, so it's not surprising that spring brings a level of optimism in the countdown to summer.

Yes, this is Britain and the weather can be unpredictable, but that doesn't mean you can't start making the most of the evening light and beer garden weather.

To give you a helping hand, we've put together your ultimate guide for fun things to do in spring, whether you're after a pint in the sun with friends, or looking to prep your garden for those perfect BBQ weather days.

Check out our top tips below...

Pack for the weather

We've all been there; you head out for a day out when it's gloriously sunny, only to find yourself drenched when the heavens open a few hours later.

Be prepared for the volatile weather by always having a bag with you, ideally with a waterproof cover.

Essentials like a raincoat, umbrella and a hat don't take up too much space.

Plan your route

Going for a long walk? Plan a route with plenty of pubs along the way.

If it's sunny, you can stop for a pint in the sun, and if it rains, there'll be shelter with perks!

Have a back up plan

As the weather is unpredictable at this time of year, there will likely be days when it’s too rainy to go out. Have a list of a few fun things to do indoors with your friends or family for this scenario.

Think choosing a new recipe to cook together, binge watching a new Netflix series, or even just grabbing some snacks and a couple of beers and having a catch up.

Use the weather forecast to help you plan ahead, and make the most of any sunny days you’re given. After all, there could be a gloomy group of rainy days around the corner. Go on a day trip, host a BBQ, head to a beer garden and enjoy pints in the sunshine.

Prep the garden

Once barbecue season kicks off, you'll be glad you've got a garden that's actually nice to spend time in.

For the green thumbed, daffodils, tree blossoms, hyacinth and tulips all tend to flower this season. It's too late to get planting now, but that doesn't mean you can't find plenty of beautiful blooms at the garden centre!

For something quirky, use recycled beer cans and glasses as mini plant pots - and win some recycling points in the process!

Buy seasonal produce

If you're a foodie or just love cooking for your mates, there is some brilliant fruit and veg in season this time of the year.

Apples, pears, cucumbers and carrots are just some of the offerings - and bonus points if they're bought locally, as you cut down on your carbon footprint.
