Top tip for picking a university: 'get inside info from current students'

‘University it isn’t just about studying, you learn how to be self-sufficient,’ says Winchester graduate Tom Lowe Photograph: University of Winchester

Why did you choose to go to university?

“For me, it was all about gaining experience. At university it isn’t just about studying, you learn how to be self-sufficient with things like cooking, cleaning, being responsible with money and dealing with the small things you take for granted when you’re living at home with your parents.”

What did you look for when selecting a university?

“The course should be number one, but so should the accommodation and the surrounding area. My course was three years, so I wanted to make sure that where I was living catered to my studying needs and social life. I attended an open day at the University of Winchester and it enabled me to see and ‘feel’ what it would be like to study and live in Winchester.”

What made you decide to study your chosen course subject?

“I studied history and archaeology. When I visited the department, the passion and knowledge that the lecturers had was a huge influence on my decision. Opportunities to get involved with real projects in the department and feel part of something was the big deciding factor.”

How did you go about finding accommodation?

“I used the open days to visit all the accommodation options, but I also took advice from the student ambassadors, who are all Winchester current students who led the tour. It’s always good to get ‘inside’ information from those who already live there.”

Have you got any tips for living with housemates?

“The best tip would be to keep in mind the consequences of your own actions. When it comes to cleaning, always remember to keep it as a team effort – ‘we need to clean this’.

“The sign of a good university is one that puts you first.”

“Also make sure you keep your door open, it removes any barriers and helps you to make friends quickly.”

What type of activities did you get involved in at university?

“I lost count! There were so many opportunities to get involved with sports and societies. I was part of the history society, the student union, a band, the list continues! I was spoilt for choice when it came to extra-curricular activities.

“I would recommend every student checks out what’s available at the student union freshers’ fair.”

Describe a typical night out while you were studying

“There were two types: the student union night out – we would have a pre-drinks evening where we played games and met people before heading out to The Vault.

“The other was the night out in town – this is where we would explore the various eateries and pubs in and around Winchester. Being a small community we would always meet people along the way.”

What were your biggest challenges at university?

“I think the writing style was the biggest. It’s a different way of working and looking at the material. I did struggle with the assignments at first, but going to student services was the best the decision I made. They supported me in developing the required skills and as a result my grades improved.”

What was your best moment at university?

“When I was elected as vice president of the student union. I felt proud that I was able to represent my fellow students on a national stage.”

For those who are worried about their results, what tips would you give them?

“Everything happens for a reason. Don’t rush your decision; make sure you take time to ensure it is the right course or university for you. Clearing is two weeks, not a day.”
