Top ten worst-hit Covid-19 towns and areas in Ireland as new hotspots emerge in big update

A new list of the top ten towns and areas in Ireland with the highest rates of coronavirus has been released.

Department of Health officials have shared a new update of the incidence rate in each Local Electoral Area in the country up to November 2.

The 14-day incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population is one of the key metrics used by health officials to determine the scale of an outbreak in a region.

And by that metric Buncrana in Co Donegal is now the worst-hit area in the country, with a rate of 594.7.

This is followed by Ballyjamesduff on 593, and Ratoath at 543.2.

Athlone, Galway City-Central and Sligo-Strandhill are the other new hotspots starting to emerge.

However the incidence rate is continuing to drop across the country overall.

Cavan, Meath and Donegal remain the counties with the highest rates, as they each have two towns making the list.

Here are the top ten Local Electoral Areas in the two weeks up to November 2:

1. Buncrana - 594.7

2. Ballyjamesduff - 593
