Top ten best Netflix original rom-coms to watch tonight

Ah the romantic comedy ... such a divisive genre of film.

Some of us proudly enjoy them, shouting about the ones we love from the rooftops, while others absolutely loathe them with a passion.

But there is a middle-ground - and that's the huge amount of people who pretend not to like them, but really they do.

Whichever camp you fall into, this following list should have something for everyone - yes, even the haters!

After all, there are few things more dependably uplifting than a nice rom-com

Whether we need a little sugar-coated pick-me up or a gentle reminder that love does actually exist, these following feel-good flicks tick a heck of a lot of boxes.

So without further ado, here's our top ten Netflix Original rom-coms, based on IMDb ratings and a smattering of good old-fashioned love:

Love, Wedding, Repeat (Netflix)

10 - Love, Wedding, Repeat

Starring: Olivia Munn, Sam Claflin, Eleanor Tomlinson, Freida Pinto

IMDB rating: 5.5/10

What it's about: This popular rom-com may not have set IMDB alight, what does that matter if our heartstrings have been plucked? The story sees Jack tasked with ensuring sister Hayley has the wedding day she always dreamt of. But unfortunately things start to go belly up when an old school friend of Hayley's turns up drunk and announces his undying love for her.

This is NOT what was anticipated, so now Jack has a new goal - trying to stop this guy from ruining the ceremony at the same time as attempting to woo his long-time crush, Dina. In an intriguing twist, the movie serves up 'alternate versions' of the same wedding day, where everybody makes different choices.

How funny is it? We laughed out loud quite a few times, actually, with Aisling Bea and Joel Fry's partnership being particularly amusing.

I want romance! Does this deliver? There are a fair few heart-swooning moments, it's true. But generally, the rather hackneyed plot does kind of signpost a lot of 'twists', so you possibly won't be surprised by much of it.

A Christmas Prince (Netflix)

9 - A Christmas Prince

Starring: Rose McIver, Ben Lamb, Tom Knight, Sarah Douglas

IMDB rating: 5.7/10

What it's about: Hands up whose been to Aldovia? Put that hand down, now! This fictional nation does not exist, but in A Christmas Prince we see a young journalist Amber pay it a visit to pen a story about a prince set to become king. He's well-known for being a bit of a modern-day Casanova, but our heroine quickly finds out he's nowhere near as much of a womaniser as the press make out. See if you can work out what happens next - and you'd be right.

How funny is it? Well ... not especially. But it is fabulously, notoriously, ridiculous - so you won't actually be able to help but laugh along.

I want romance! Does this deliver? It is the classic tale of a small town girl marrying into royalty, so it completely depends on if that premise floats your boat.

Sierra Burgess Is A Loser (Netflix)

8 - Sierra Burg ess Is A Loser

Starring: Shannon Purser, Noah Centineo, Kristine Froseth

IMDB rating: 5.8/10

What it's about: Sierra Burgess is an unpopular classmate and really fancies a guy from another school. The sticking point is that this guy is 'way out of her league'. So far, so classic. Through a rather silly but fortunate case of mistaken identity, they start chatting and end up falling for each other. So will Sierra keep up the pretence? Well, you'll have to watch it to find out!

How funny is it? With practically zero laugh-out-loud moments and a couple of titters, Sierra Burgess Is A Loser does not score well in the laughter stakes.

I want romance! Does this deliver? Crammed with genuinely moving moments, this film ranks very highly indeed. Give it a watch and you'll see what we mean.

The Perfect Date (Netflix)

7 - The Perfect Date

Starring: Noah Centineo, Laura Marano, Camila Mendes

IMDB rating: 5.8/10

What it's about: Our leading man Brooks Rattigan (now there's name) wants to go to Yale but it's far too expensive. So what does he do? Well, after taking someone dateless to a dance for a small fee, he can smell a superb business opportunity - namely pimping himself out as stand-in boyfriend for specific occasions. Will he inadvertently meet the girl of his dreams this way? Well ... what do you think?

How funny is it? It is fairly chucklesome. If we're talking an out of ten scale, we'd say about a 6.

I want romance! Does this deliver? Yes we think it does. While not in the same league as the aforementioned Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, there's enough warmth in The Perfect Date to make it worth your time.

6 - The Kissing Booth

Starring: Joey King, Jacob Elordi, Joel Courtney, Molly Ringwald

IMDB rating: 5.9/10

What it's about: This follows the well worn-path of boy and girl being best friends. The boy's older brother is a hunk but way off limits. Enter a ludicrous plot device - the fundraising titular Kissing Booth. In it, we see the boy's older brother and girl and ... well, you know the rest. Forbidden love and all that.

How funny is it? Not especially. The film tries hard to be funny, but maybe that's its problem.

I want romance! Does this deliver? A high-school love story to swoon over, we'd say it's a good 'un.

To All The Boys 2: P.S. I Still Love You (Netflix)

5 - To All The Boys 2: P.S. I Still Love You

Starring: Lara Condor and Noah Centineo

IMDB rating: 6.1/10

What it's about: For those of you that haven't seen the first instalment, it's important to know that it ended with Lara Jean Covey and Peter Kavinsky falling madly in love. But in this film, it isn't long before Peter's popularity starts to cause tension between them. Trouble in paradise, hey? Isn't it always the way ... Elsewhere, we see Lara Jean's childhood crush John Ambrose McClaren make an appearance - causing things to really go awry.

How funny is it? Plenty of laughs in this, with Jean's kid sister Kitty being especially hilarious.

I want romance! Does this deliver? You will laugh. You will cry. So that's a resounding yes from us!

Someone Great (Netflix)

4 - Someone Great

Starring: Gina Rodriguez, Lakeith Stanfield, Brittany Snow, DeWanda Wise, Rosario Dawson

IMDB rating: 6.1/10

What it's about: Boasting an enviably hip job as a music journalist AND boasting a mega-cool partner Nate, Jenny's life is simply amazing. But when she's offered a job in a new city, her relationship hits the skids. Cue a downward spiral of drinking and self pity. In an effort to snap her out of it, her chums arrange a big night out.

How funny is it? The chucklesome trio of DeWanda, Gina and Brittany are firing on all cylinders, but the laughs are sometimes spread a little too thinly. But when they land, they land well.

I want romance! Does this deliver? It isn't really that kind of movie, it's more about how the love between friends can often triumph over romance, which is kind of sweet and often very true.

Set It Up (Netflix)

3 - Set It Up

Starring: Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Lucy Liu, Taye Diggs

IMDB rating: 6.5/10

What it's about: Two assistants to highly unpleasant high-powered New York execs are really struggling to stay afloat. Thus they decide to team up in a bid to beat the bosses. So do they set up a rival business? Engineer their downfall? Nope. They bizarrely hook their managers up on dates, hoping it will make them nicer people (hey, it's only a movie!) Romance begins to blossom ... in an altogether rather unlikely scenario.

How funny is it? P redictable, laboured in parts and a little obvious. But there's a certain familiarity in it which is warm and comforting. We'd say it's 'a bit funny'.

I want romance! Does this deliver? No, not at all. If you want romance, you need to look elsewhere!

Always Be My Maybe (Netflix)

2 - Always Be My Maybe

Starring: Ali Wong, Randall Park, Keanu Reeves

IMDB rating: 6.8/10

What it's about: Two childhood friends have a massive argument and don't speak for 15 years. But funnily enough they happen to cross paths as adults and there's definitely some chemistry between them. So are they still friends or has it blossomed into love? It's a well-worn, some would say tawdry, cliche, but in Ali Wong's hands it's elevated into something else entirely. A neat, tight narrative and great performances lift this head and shoulders above most other Netflix Original rom-coms.

How funny is it? While you won't be laughing out loud necessarily, you will be doing a heck of a lot of smiling. And all that grinning adds up to a lot of feel-good vibes by the time the movie's over.

I want romance! Does this deliver? Aw yes, we'd say so. Sentimental, warm and all shot through with heart. We recommend Always Be My Maybe. Plus Keanu Reeves is in it, what more do you want?

To All The Boys I've Loved Before (Netflix)

1 - To All The Boys I've Loved Before

Starring: Lana Condor, Noah Centineo

IMDB rating: 7/10

What it's about: A very sweet premise sees L ara Jean penning love letters to all the boys she's ever fancied. These declarations are never actually sent and are instead kept in a box. Incredibly THEY ALL GET SENT OUT. Ludicrous premise aside, some real drama and intrigue follows. One of the unsuspecting recipients – namly the swoonsome lacrosse player – hatches a plan that'll help Lara bounce back from her romantic accident.

How funny is it? Very earnest, very sweet, very enchanting, very funny!

I want romance! Does this deliver? This is as romantic as George Clooney proposing on the shores of Lake Como and as sweet as Notting Hill and Love Actually combined. If you're going to watch one rom-com this evening, make sure it's this one.
