Top street artist creating new murals in Stokes Croft - and you can help design them

People are being invited to have their say on the appearance of three murals that are set to be brought to life in Stokes Croft.

The murals will be painted on three elevations of the new student accommodation building currently under construction on Wilder Street.

With renowned graffiti festival Upfest on board with the project, it is hoped the three artworks will "make the brand new accommodation look and feel like a part of Stokes Croft".

Bristol artist Ollie Gillard, also known as Gage Graphics, has been chosen as the artist to install the murals thanks to his "storytelling ability and overall aesthetic".

But the design of his creations, which are being commissioned by the developer behind the flats plan, Watkin Jones, will be inspired by the ideas of nearby residents.

A small number of people who capture the imagination of the artist in their responses to a short questionnaire, which can be filled out here, will be invited to a design workshop to help further develop the design. Due to the current coronavirus restrictions, this workshop will be completed via video call.

A spokesperson for the consultation said: "This questionnaire has been written to help capture the thoughts and ideas of people who live in Stokes Croft and the surrounding area.

"It's a chance to help co-create a piece of artwork that they’ll be proud to have in their local neighborhood. This is an amazing opportunity to work with Upfest, Europe’s largest live street art and graffiti festival, and Bristol-based street artist Gage Graphics, to come up with a visionary and stunning design.

"The energy and uniqueness of the area is expected to be represented through Ollie's artwork."

The consultation will be open until Thursday, January 28 2021. More information can be found here.
