Top South West law firm's "charming man" steps down after 22 years

He’s been one of the unsung stalwarts of Plymouth’s business community, but now the ever charming Alan Bragg has decided to call it a day after 22 years in the service of legal titan Foot Anstey.

Mr Bragg has been with the top 100 legal practice since 1997, but at the age of 79 the man described by top brass as “lighting up the business” is taking a well-earned rest.

Mr Bragg has acted as security officer, front-of-house and in the post room for the past 15 years.

His many years of hard work and “good cheer” were recognised by managing partner John Westwell who threw a farewell knees-up in his honour.

Mr Bragg said: “I like to go around and cheer people up. I have that sort of job where I’m able to do that. All the people here make my day. I’ve enjoyed myself at Foot Anstey.

“I’ll be able to spend more time with my wife, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I’t be too bored I’m sure.”

When Mr Bragg joined the legal firm – which has its HQ in Plymouth and other offices in London, Bristol, Exeter, Taunton, Truro and Southampton – when it was still called Foot and Bowden and had about 80 staff.

The Plymouth office, now at Salt Quay House at Sutton Harbour, it head office for a £43.3million business employing about 580 people.

It is the 31st largest business on Plymouth by turnover, and one of the largest regional law firms based outside London.

Mr Westwell said: “It’s not too much to say Alan is as charming a man as you can meet. His

infectious good humour and ready smile has been lighting up this business for 22 years. We wish him well in retirement, thank him – and will miss him.”
