TOKYO — Ashleigh Barty, the No. 1 women’s tennis player in the world, lost her first-round women’s singles match to Sara Sorribes Tormo in a stunning upset at the Tokyo Games.
Barty was dropped in straight sets — 6-4, 6-3 — two weeks after winning Wimbledon. The 25-year-old Australian also won the 2019 French Open. She has been the top-ranked player in the world since September 2019.
Sorribes Tormo, 24, has just one singles title and two doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She’s the 48th-ranked player in the world.
The match was the first played Sunday at Centre Court at Ariake Tennis Park with Naomi Osaka, the No. 2 player in the world, scheduled to follow.
