Top Scottish Tory to miss party conference in Aberdeen because there are no childcare facilities

The Scots Tory constitution spokesman will miss his party conference this weekend because there are no childcare facilities.

Adam Tomkins has four children and could not organise cover which would let him attend the two-day gathering in Aberdeen.

It means Ruth Davidson’s frontbench spokesman on independence and Brexit will be missing while both issues are top of the political agenda.

A source close to the MSP said he is “furious” no creche facility had been set up to help families who want to come along.

“Adam wanted to go but there was no way of getting childcare - it’s shocking that nothing is organised for parents. He is furious and won’t be going,” the source said.

The SNP have laid on a creche at their conferences, including one held in Edinburgh last weekend.

Scottish Labour members attending their party conference in March were able to register children at a creche free of charge.

A spokesman for the Scottish Conservatives said: “We will speak to our members and those who attend conference to see if this would be a welcome idea for future events.”
