Top school to hold entrance exams first

The prestigious Triam Udom Suksa School, where admissions are highly competitive, will hold its entrance exam before any other school, to allow students who fail the entrance test to find a place elsewhere.

Piyabutr Cholvijarn, president of Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec), revealed the plan on Wednesday, after the Obec met to decide on two proposed solutions to problems surrounding school admissions.

The decision to require the Triam Udom Suksa School to hold its entrance exam before any other school for the new term beginning in May next year was one of two solutions approved at the meeting, he said.

Initially, 282 schools whose admissions are considered as highly competitive were told to hold their entrance exams ahead of other, less competitive schools, but it was ultimately decided at the meeting that only Triam Udom Suksa School should do so in the coming semester, added Mr Piyabutr.

"Another solution approved in the meeting is to require all schools under the Obec's jurisdiction to offer five more places per class in 2019," he said.

The new quota applies to the admission of Matthayom 1 and Matthayom 4 students, he said.

The maximum number of students per class for the pre-primary school and Prathom 1 level was kept unchanged, he said.

The National Institute of Educational Testing Service has also affirmed that the Ordinary National Education can be held two months early so students can prepare for the entrance exams.
