Top road safety tips for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians as Storm Lorenzo hits Ireland

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians have been warned to take care on the roads as Storm Lorenzo hits batter Ireland.

The Road Safety Authority have released a list of important road safety tips drivers should follow as the storm arrives this afternoon.

While driving in windy conditions it is important to ensure your vehicle is in good condition and windscreen washers are filled before taking to the road.

Reducing speed is also critical, as fallen debris and objects could be suddenly blown onto the road.

Vehicles can also be more difficult to control in high winds, particularly high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists.

Drivers should also be aware that both other motorists and cyclists need to be given more space than normal, as they need to navigate debris left on the road.

Storm Lorenzo will also bring severe rainfall in some parts of the country, and the RSA has also given advice to motorists on driving in wet conditions.

The organisation reminded drivers that aquaplaning becomes possible on roads with speed limits of 100 km/h and 120 km/h.

It is also important to use dipped headlines at all times and to check tyres, replacing them if the thread depth is below 3mm.

After going through deep water, drivers can also drive slowly with their feet on the brake pedal for a short distance to help dry the brakes.

Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists were also warned to take particular care on the roads this week.

The RSA advises that bright clothing with reflective armbands and belt should be worn at all times, as visibility can be impeded in rainy conditions.

Pedestrians should walk on the footpath where possible, and if not they should walk on the right side of the road, facing traffic.

Cyclists are also recommended to invest in front and rear lights, a good set of mud guards and tyres with a deeper tread, which will provide added friction on slippery surfaces.
