FORT WORTH, Texas — TCU gave No. 1 Baylor a run for its money on Saturday afternoon, but fell short of an upset in a 76-64 loss at Schollmaier Arena.
Coming off an 18-day COVID-19 pause didn’t help the Frogs. Neither did a wrist injury to guard Mike Miles in the second half. Miles played through it but certainly wasn’t himself down the stretch.
Baylor, though, showed why it’s the top-ranked team in the country and remains one of just three teams that are unbeaten.
The Bears (15-0) made eight 3-pointers in the second half, including six by guard Adam Flagler, to take control of the game. The Frogs closed the first half on a 14-2 run and enjoyed a 37-31 halftime lead.
Dreams of an upset waned early in the second half.
The Bears went on a 17-0 run, turning a 44-36 deficit with 18 minutes left into a 53-44 lead with 14 minutes left. Flagler had a couple of 3-pointers in that stretch for the Bears.
TCU (10-2) pulled within one possession a couple of times but it never regained the lead. Instead, Baylor pulled away late for another double-digit victory.
TCU dropped to 1-9 against the No. 1-ranked team in its history. The lone victory was over Kansas in the 2017 Big 12 tournament in Kansas City.
Saturday marked just the second time in program history that TCU hosted the No. 1-ranked team along with KU during a nonconference game in 2003.
TCU travels to Kansas State for its next game on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. in Manhattan, Kan.
