Top pro-Israel lawyer who faked vandalism attack at Scots home faces being struck off

A lawyer could be struck off over a bizarre entrapment plot to discredit a Palestinian pressure group.

Pro-Israel Matthew Berlow devised a conspiracy with an accomplice to catch out another lawyer he believed was subjecting him to anti-Semitic abuse.

Glasgow -based Berlow helped fake a graffiti attack at his home and dragged political opponents into the firing line by making false claims against the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign on social media.

An initial probe by the reporter for the Law Society of Scotland recommended Berlow be fined £500 for unsatisfactory conduct.

But the society’s professional conduct sub committee has since decided his behaviour potentially amounts to professional misconduct, a more serious offence.

Berlow, who has been found guilty of four previous offences, could be struck off or restricted in what legal duties he can perform.

The society said if necessary it would prosecute him before the Scottish Solicitors’ Discipline Tribunal.

Berlow yesterday insisted he would clear his name – despite admitting his part in the plot.

He said: “These false complaints, which are all associated with each other, emanate from an anti-Semitic source that has been targeting me for some years.”
