Top police and fire trade union official charged with sex assaults

A top trade union official who represents civilian police and fire service workers has been charged with sex assaults.

Gerry Crawley - a regional organiser with Unison - allegedly molested a woman on various occasions over a two and a half-year period.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges at Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday.

The 58-year-old, former Labour councillor, of East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, is also accused of performing a sex act in her presence.

The court heard how he allegedly assaulted the woman at his home, at another address in East Kilbride and in a vehicle.

It's claimed he asked to see her underwear, touched her underwear, placed his hands under her clothing and touched her body.

Prosecutors also say he grabbed the woman and tried to kiss her.

Crawley is alleged to have assaulted her on a number of occasions between January 2016 and July 2018.

A second charge states that between June 1, 2018, and July 31, 2018, he engaged in a sexual act in the woman's presence at an address in East Kilbride.

Crawley has worked across Scotland supporting civilian police and fire service workers in his role as a trade union official.

He also represents Unison members working in the energy sector.

Crawley was not present in court for the hearing and not guilty pleas were lodged on his behalf.

Sheriff Linda Nicholson fixed trial for November.
