Top NT athlete faces assault charge

2004 National Indigenous Sportswoman of the Year, Bo de la Cruz

Editor’s note 22/11/2019: The charge of aggravated assault against Bo de la Cruz was withdrawn on July 25, 2011, and the case was dismissed.

A prominent Northern Territory sportswoman is facing an aggravated assault charge in relation to an incident that happened after a rugby union grand final.

Bo de la Cruz has represented Australia in Rugby Sevens and touch football, and in 2004 she was named National Indigenous Sportswoman of the Year.

Court documents allege she assaulted a woman in Darwin in September last year and she will be summonsed to face an aggravated assault charge.

Northern Territory Rugby Union says the incident took place between Ms de la Cruz and a spectator, minutes after last year's women's rugby grand final.

Ms de la Cruz had just raised the premiership trophy and been named best and fairest.

Northern Territory Rugby Union says it has fully investigated the incident.

A date for a court mention has not been set.
