Top Manchester chef Adam Reid celebrates Great British Menu victory

Manchester's very own Adam Reid has won the main course round on BBC Two's Great British Menu.

The renowned chef, who is chef-patron at Adam Reid at The French, fended off stiff competition to triumph with his comforting chicken stew.

This series sees some of the nation's best chefs battling it out to cook a course of a banquet at Abbey Road Studios, marking the 50th anniversary of the last time The Beatles played together.

His music-inspired main dish, named 'Comfort Food Sounds Good', included a stew of barley, sweetcorn, leeks and turnip, and roast organic chicken stuffed with herbs.

The plates were topped with crispy chicken skin and grating of truffle, and served with a jug of chicken sauce.

Reid will be cooking the same dish at a banquet at this year's Manchester Food and Drink Festival, inside the giant igloo-shaped dining dome at Cathedral Gardens. You can read the rest of the line-up here .

While cooking, Reid - originally from Stalybridge - told his fellow competitors: "The connection between music and food to me is an emotive one - you use both things to either make yourself feel better or fit an occasion."

He also said his dish was about: "Celebrating great food, great music and great British culture."

His chicken was described by judges as 'beautiful', 'faultless' and 'perfect' and scored a perfect 10.

When told he had won this part of the show, Reid clapped his hands to his face in delight and congratulated runner-up Chris McClurg.

He said: "Wow. I didn't expect that in the slightest. I knew I'd done the dish the way it should be done, I was more than happy with it. But yeah, I'm just over the moon. I don't have words, for once in my life."

Reid previously won the dessert round on season 11 of the cooking show, with his Golden Empire dessert - a baked apple compote, hazelnut crumble and meadowsweet custard in a golden apple-shaped sugar casing.

His restaurant within The Midland Hotel has also recently been given four AA Rosettes.

On BBC Two at 8pm tonight, Reid will compete for a chance to cook the dessert course at Abbey Road - with Peter Hook judging.
