Top Leeds chef to open exciting new restaurant replacing Jamie's Italian

A brand new restaurant will soon open in the building which used to house Jamie's Italian.

The Italian restaurant in Leeds city centre suddenly closed in May, just hours after Jamie Oliver's food emporium collapsed.

However, foodie fans will soon be able to sit down for a meal at 35 Park Row again, with the former head chef at Leeds' Harvey Nichols returning to his Yorkshire roots.

Simon Shaw used to devise the menu at the high-end Briggate department store, but he is now coming back to Leeds with the opening of his Spanish tapas restaurant, El Gato Negro.

He opened the first El Gato Negro branch in Manchester in 2016 and is preparing to launch a second restaurant in Liverpool this August.

The Leeds branch will be the third when it opens in late 2019.

Speaking on news of the expansion Shaw said: "I was born and raised in Yorkshire and got my first real footing as a chef in Leeds. It’s always been my intention to return and open a restaurant in the city.

"I've spent the last four years looking for the right location and when the Jamie’s site became available it was too good an opportunity to miss.

"It’s a beautiful building steeped in history and has the most incredible features.

"I’m confident in our position and am looking forward to opening both in Leeds and, this August, in Liverpool; two of the North’s most exciting cities."
