Top Irish violinist to play at the inauguration of US President-elect Joe Biden

An Irish violinist has been invited to play at the inauguration of Joe Biden – four years after she first performed for him in his ancestral home of Co Louth.

Patricia Treacy, described as Ireland's premier violinist, will play at Mr Biden's inauguration in January after receiving an invitation from the President-elect in recent days.

On Twitter, Ireland's Embassy in the US congratulated Patricia on the invitation: "We're delighted that Patricia Treacy, one of Ireland's finest violinists & a proud Louth woman, has been invited to perform at President-elect Biden's inauguration next January."

The Louth native has a string of major accolades under her belt, and has performed in illustrious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City.

She's also a former finalist in the string section of RTE's Musician of the Future competition.

She has played for Mr Biden on a number of occasions, and was even invited to perform at some of his rallies during a bitterly fought US presidential election.

And Patricia isn't the only Irish act in the frame for Mr Biden's inauguration.

Legendary trad group The Chieftains have also received an invitation to play at the inauguration, which will take place in Washington DC.

Amid pandemic-related uncertainty, it's still not clear if The Chieftains will appear in person or virtually at the ceremony, but founding member Paddy Moloney has said they're hoping to appear in some form or another.

Paddy told the Irish Mail on Sunday that "Joe is a big fan of the band."

The main man of The Chieftains said he had sent Mr Biden a special message to congratulate him on winning the presidency.

"I did send a message to congratulate him," he said.

"We would be, of course, honoured to play for Joe and I certainly would go but everything would have to be safe to travel."
