Top Ibiza and Magaluf nightclubs could be closed all summer in bid to stop new spread of Covid-19

Some of Europe's biggest nightspots in Majorca and Ibiza will remain closed - despite Spain relaxing travel restrictions.

The larger clubs, situated in party resorts like Magaluf in Majorca and San Antonio in Ibiza, must stay shut even though most bars and clubs have been given the green light to reopen as Spain lifts its state of emergency.

The regional Balearic government has confirmed that clubs and bars with a maximum capacity of 300 will be permitted to stay open until 2.30am from next Monday.

But, in accordance with regulations to combat anti-social behaviour in some of the holiday resorts, bigger venues like BCM in Magaluf and Pacha in Ibiza will stay shut.

And reports have appeared in local media that government officials want the huge venues to remain closed when the peak holiday season resumes.

Some venues have already announced they will not be open again until 2021.

While others have called for clubs to be allowed to reopen from next month in a bid to salvage something from the summer with a series of tough restrictions in place for revellers.

These include mandatory face masks and curbs on music.

Spain's central government had left the decision on the re-opening of nightspots like discos in phase three to regional governments.

However, the Balearic Islands' government blocked discos and late-night bars reopening when the region moved towards the latest stage of its coronavirus recovery programme at the start of last week.
