Top Gun sequel film release postponed until December due to coronavirus crisis

The Top Gun sequel starring Tom Cruise, 57, has had it's release date postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Paramount's Top Gun:Maverick was due to hit movie theatres on June 24,  but has been pushed back to December 23.

The Top Gun sequel comes over 30 years since the original movie hit cinemas across the world.

In the comeback, actor Tom Cruise assumes his old character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and returns to train Top Gun pilots for a new mission.

Among the star studded cast is the original Iceman actor Val Kilmer.

Actor Miles Teller has also joined the cast as Lt. Bradley Bradshaw, the son of Maverick's late best friend Nick "Goose" Bradshaw.

Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Glen Powell as also joining the cast of the new Top Gun film.

The original 1986 movie , which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song as well as a Golden Globe, was a instant hit and made a whopping $356.8 million in the box office.

According to Variety, the Top Gun sequel has cost upwards of $150 million to produce.

Top Gun:Maverick is actually one of several upcoming films that Paramount have decided to reschedule.

Alongside the navy aviation hit, A Quiet Place Part II, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run and The Tomorrow War have all been postponed.

The ongoing Hollywood delays appear to point to an uncertainty over how summer film releases will be impacted because of the pandemic.

Tom Cruise is also due to star in the seventh Mission Impossible movie, which is expected to be released in 2021.

In February, Paramount Pictures also announced that filming in Italy on the spy action thriller had been postponed because of the pandemic.

The veteran actor has not spoken out about the recent decision to delay the airing of Top Gun:Maverick.
