Top Gun: Maverick trailer – Tom Cruise takes to the skies in new clip

Tom Cruise is back in the driving seat in the new trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, which had been revealed online.

The actor returns as the legendary fighter pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell more than three decades after starring in the 1986 original.

The new clip offers more of an insight into his journey as he takes on the role of flight instructor for Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw – the son of his late friend Goose.

“I have to admit I wasn’t expecting an invitation back,” he says in the clip, returning to US Navy's Fighter Weapons School.

“They’re called orders, Maverick,” he’s told.

As well as previews of breathtaking aerial aerobatics and interactions with his young students, the clip offers us a glimpse of combat, with jets seen evading homing missiles.

Val Kilmer returns as Iceman, while Miles Teller, John Hamm, Glenn Powell, Jennifer Connelly and Jay Ellis also star.

It was previously revealed that the new film is focusing on elements of modern warfare, including the use of drone technology.

Joseph Kosinski, who worked alongside Cruise on the 2013 sci-fi thriller Oblivion, will direct Top Gun: Maverick. It will arrive in UK cinemas on June 26 2020.
